GOP Lincoln Day Dinner

"...Other early players in the race include former Luzerne County chiropractor David Madeira, Lehman Township resident Ted Yale, and Lake Ariel accountant Steven Solieri.

Solieri, marketing himself as a conservative non-politician, is a financial expert who says he “Just wants to lend my skills at a time when they are sorely needed in the financial area in this country.” With a doctoral degree, Solieri has done extensive research into Chris Carney’s House record, and says the bills the Congressman has voted for, including the hot-button health care bill, the stimulus and others, are “a slap in the face” to citizens of the 10th district. “I have been up and down the recovery.gov website, and it’s just an amazing waste of money. People have lives, so they can’t always do the research for themselves. They need to elect someone who is capable and competent to represent them in Washington.” He believes he is that man, though he recognizes the national party has already laid its claim elsewhere, and he’s got an uphill battle ahead of him to win in the primary."

The Scranton Times-Tribune: Debt ceiling soars

"Editor: Often a student will ask me to explain how the debt ceiling works.

Imagine you own a home with a mortgage and you also have an equity line of credit. When you need money to pay bills, you simply write a check from the equity line. The only consequence is that the interest and principal must be repaid. Typically, only the interest is included in payments in subsequent months. Next month your bills require you to request additional funds and the cycle continues until you exhaust the limit on your equity line. You cannot play the game any further unless the bank will allow a reappraisal of your house and the appraised value has increased. The same game is played by Congress. However, the true value that the bankers are ever willing to lend us is unknown.

On Feb. 4 Congress voted to extend the debt ceiling by $1.9 trillion, 15 percent. No further votes on the debt ceiling will be required before the 2010 elections.

Congress and Rep. Chris Carney, who voted for the extension, are betting that you will forget this when you enter the voting booth.

I hope a new representative will be elected. One of the first actions of the new representative must be a vote against extensions of the debt ceiling and against incerased taxes. This will force Congress to cut spending.

Another 10th CD Candidate

"Steven Solieri is an accountant that lives in Lake Ariel that has a number crunching business in New Hyde Park, NY and Lake Ariel and is a Professor of Accounting at Queens College in New York City who has a Ph.D. and 4 Masters Degrees.

His welcome message on his website:

I am not a politician and do not want to act like one, ever. I consider myself a businessman and patriot who, like so many of my friends in the Tea Party movement, have had enough of sending people to Washington that are not responsive to their constituency.

Reading his issues page he proposes at least 3 Constitutional amendments and laundry list of tax cuts. He wants to cut the size of government in half except for veterans benefits, doubts global warming and wants to end regulation of business. "

10th District GOP Race Shapes Up

"Solieri is marketing himself as a conservative non-politician, a financial expert who says he “Just wants to lend my skills at a time when they are sorely needed in the financial area in this country.” With a doctoral degree in the field, Solieri has done extensive research into Chris Carney’s House record, and says the bills the Congressman has voted for, including the hot-button health care bill, the stimulus and others, are “a slap in the face” to citizens of the 10th district. He says he has a prescription for the district and the country cut from the Ronald Reagan fiscal cloth: a program of business incentives and tax cuts designed to alleviate the tax load from small businesses and individuals, which he says will stimulate the economy and create jobs. The New Misery Index
Professors Steven A. Solieri, CPA (Queens College, C.U.N.Y.) and Petros E. Ioannatos (Kettering University, Flint, MI) are working on a paper to develop a New Misery Index similar to the one proposed by Former President Reagan. The New Misery Index is a three-tiered economic measure with one component measuring the state of the “Financial Crisis” (The Loan Delinquency Rate). The other two measures focus on one traditional measure (Unemployment) and the last measure focuses upon the inter-generational wealth transfer occurring from current fiscal policies (The Government Budget Deficit as a Percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP)).

The Scranton Times-Tribune: OBAMA and DEMOCRATS CUT A DEAL WITH THE UNIONS TO DELAY TAXES
By Dr. Steven A. Solieri

"You would think that with the publicity surrounding the bribes made to states to win the votes of their representatives for the health care reform bill these practices would end.

Well, they haven't. In fact President Obama and his Democratic cronies are so bold that they have cut a deal to sell America out again and asked that we bring it on.

Obama and the Democrats orchestrated a deal to exempt union health care plans from the taxes that many Americans will begin paying for if the health care reform bill passes.

These taxes, under the "Cadillac plan" provisions, would be delayed for union members until 2018 (cost $60 billion).

The nonunion Americans, with existing health care plans that are above the "basic" government plan, would be subjected to a 40 percent excise tax rate.

Think about the implications of this "agreement." Two people, with the exact same insurance coverage, may be working for the same company and one is taxed 40 percent for her plan from day one while the other is not taxed until 2018. Does that seem right to you? It doesn't to me. If it sounds like a bribe, it is.

The arrogance of the president and our Democrat representatives is unrivaled. While most polls show that the American people are against the health care bill, Mr. Obama and your representatives have said this is a fight they want. I propose we give it to them by supporting the opponents of the incumbent representatives from our area and by voting.

The American people and the residents of Northeast Pennsylvania have never been more empowered to show a collective voice against these scoundrels. Vote the bums out."

STEVEN A. SOLIERI, Ph.D.

Carney opponents have an uphill climb (Scranton Times-Tribune)

BY BORYS KRAWCZENIUK (STAFF WRITER) Scran
Published: November 29, 2009

"When he announced his run for Congress in September 2005, few even knew who Chris Carney was.

Upset that U.S. Rep. Don Sherwood and a House Republican majority aimed to intervene in the end-of-life case of Florida woman Terry Schiavo, the Democrat from Dimock Twp. decided Mr. Sherwood would not get his usual free ride to re-election.

By then, news of Mr. Sherwood's marital infidelity was also percolating through the electorate.

Capitalizing on that and a wave of dissatisfaction with the country's direction under President Bush, Mr. Carney won in 2006. He enjoyed another anti-Bush wave last year, surprising many with an easy re-election win in a congressional district with almost five Republicans for every four Democrats.

Now, a group of largely anonymous Republicans and one better-known past contender are measuring the potential that a backlash against Democrats who supported President Obama's policies could knock off Mr. Carney.

"This is the first time (in a while) that this race is going to be about the Democrats," said Luke Bernstein, executive director of the state Republican Party. "Chris Carney has never had a race about Chris Carney.""
