The New Misery Index
Professors Steven A. Solieri, CPA (Queens College, C.U.N.Y.) and Petros E. Ioannatos (Kettering University, Flint, MI) are working on a paper to develop a New Misery Index similar to the one proposed by Former President Reagan. The New Misery Index is a three-tiered economic measure with one component measuring the state of the “Financial Crisis” (The Loan Delinquency Rate). The other two measures focus on one traditional measure (Unemployment) and the last measure focuses upon the inter-generational wealth transfer occurring from current fiscal policies (The Government Budget Deficit as a Percentage of Gross Domestic Product (GDP)).

My Motivation for Running for Office

Thank you for visiting my website. I am not a politician and do not want to act like one, ever. I consider myself a businessman and patriot who, like so many of my friends in the Tea Party movement, have had enough of sending people to Washington that are not responsive to their constituency.

Federalism
We want to bring back the country our founding fathers left us. We want our country back that is based on Liberty and Freedom with a small Federal Government that is defined by the Constitution that limits explicit powers of the Federal Government and with few, if any, implicit powers. The Tenth Amendment is crystal clear; those powers not expressly given to the Federal Government are reserved for the State and the People.

What I Believe I Can Contribute
My main talents reside in the area of finance, accounting and teaching. From what I have seen of Washington, they sorely need all these skills. They need a lesson in proper accounting so that the games being played by previous Congresses are not repeated. They need a fiscal conservative that treats every dime as important and doesn’t throw around billions of dollars that represents YOUR hard earned and government confiscated MONEY. We need to rein in the Federal Reserve and be certain that the monetary policies do not devalue our currency. Such devaluations make your savings worth less and all our hard work and frugality would be useless.

Stands on Key Issues
Please take time to review my Stands on Issues and my general conservative philosophy. I believe you will find it in line with 70% of Americans who are hard-working and patriotic. These are summarized below:

Cutting the Size of Government
I believe we need to cut the size of the Federal Government in half over the next four years and to empower small businesses to pick up the new job creation needed to absorb the Federal government workers who will need to find other employment.

Cut Taxes Across-the-Board
We must make permanent the across-the-board Bush tax cuts that are scheduled to expire in 2010. We must also cut taxes in small businesses by making the first $50,000 of income exempt. We must also incentivize the hiring of people when needed to create jobs. Nothing will do this more that by cutting taxes and encouraging a stable environment by not proposing new rules and changes every month as the current Congress has done for the past two years now.

No More Government Bailouts
The intervention into markets by the Federal Government does nothing more than distort the natural market mechanisms. Firms that should fail should not be artificially propped up. With industries like the auto industry, the government should encourage market forces to work out the problems and if they cannot be done through normal market forces then they should be allowed to fail and allow the markets to clear. In the long run the bailouts merely postpone the inevitable and cost the taxpayers billions, not to mention the distortions created in the market as a result of government intervention.

Reining in Fannie & Freddie
The Federal Government is now responsible for between 70% and 90 of all loans issued in any month. This is outrageous and not in accordance with out capitalistic system. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac must be downsized and eventually eliminated over the next five to ten years. There is no reason private companies will not step in and fill the void to the extent reasonable by the market mechanisms. The subsidization of risky loans is not in the best interests of the taxpayers and providing credit to non-credit worthy persons is illogical.

Cap and Trade
The concept of cap and trade to limit the use of carbon (burning fossil fuels) and the trading of unused credits by companies that do not consume carbon is a prescription for disaster to our economy. We need to place all our options, coal, gas, oil, nuclear, wind, solar and bio-fuels on the table and allow them to all compete without subsidies and without limitation to search and discovery in the U.S. and off-shore. America must devise a strategy for eventual energy independence in the next ten years.

The Environment
In an effort to overturn the Supreme Court decision Massachusetts vs. the EPA, the Congress must move immediately to amend the clean air act to specifically exclude carbon dioxide (CO2), the stuff we exhale and the materials plants need to create oxygen. We should also trim the power of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to create havoc in our economy with their regulations.

Supporting the Military and Benefits for Veterans and Their Families
Those military people that pay the ultimate sacrifice should have their families adequately provided for into the future with a combination of private charities and government programs. Those returning with injuries should get the care they need and companies should be incentivized through tax and jobs credits for hiring our veterans. The skills and work ethic possessed by our returning vets are second to none. We should welcome them home and make it easy to adjust back into the society that they are credited with protecting.

Limitation of Bureaucracies
The Federal Bureaucracies have become a forth branch of government that is not properly accountable to the Representatives in Congress and to the people. Therefore it is necessary that the powers transferred to these agencies be limited, curtailed and even abolished. Moratoriums on all new Federal Rules and Regulations should be enacted and a reduction in the Federal Code of Laws and Rules should be enacted by all agencies across the board.

Constitutional Amendment for Congressional Override of Supreme Court Decisions
A Constitutional Amendment that will allow Congress with a 2/3rds majority to override a decision of the Supreme Court should be implemented. Cases in Connecticut have shown that private property is under assault from the Supreme Court if government can benefit from additional tax revenues. This was NEVER the intent of the so-called “taking clause” in the Constitution and should be overturned along with decisions such as Massachusetts vs. the EPA discussed above and others.

Review of Federal Judges with Life-Time Appointments
Congress must consider an amendment that allows for the oversight of Federal Judges (including Supreme Court Justices) with lifetime appointments. Those judges that do not adhere to a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution should be considered for removal. This will likely entail an amendment to the Constitution and could allow for Presidential veto power and override with significant super-majority.

Please visit this site often as it will be updated frequently during the election season. I hope you enjoy the site and wish that it will provide you with insights on my view of the state of politics in America.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steven A. Solieri, CPA

“We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself, and the product of his labor; while with others, the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men, and the product of other men's labor. Here are two, not only different, but incompatible things, called by the same name - liberty. And it follows that each of the things is, by the respective parties, called by two different and incompatible names–Liberty and Tyranny.”
-Abraham Lincoln 1864
